The Best Places to Stay in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka: Budget, Mid-Range, and Luxury Hotel Picks

If you know me at all, you know I LOVE Japan. I first visited in March 2023 and I’ve already been back 3 times since then! That is a little crazy I know, but this country just has so much to offer… I’m already dreaming up my next trip there!

Chances are you’ll be visiting at least one of the places in the “Golden Triangle” on your first trip to Japan. While I must urge you to try to get off the beaten path a little, I wanted to provide this guide to help you find great accommodation options in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka! These are all of my top hotel recommendations for every budget!

Where to Stay in Tokyo

Tokyo is HUGE. There are so many distinct neighborhoods, each offering a different experience. It can be a little overwhelming deciding which neighborhood to base yourself in, but for first time visitors I would definitely recommend Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ginza. These are all close to public transit and some of the top sights around the city.

Here are my picks for budget, mid-range, and luxury travelers!

Budget: Nine Hours Shinjuku-North

If you’re looking for an affordable, futuristic capsule hotel experience, Nine Hours in Shinjuku is a great choice. It offers sleek pods, clean facilities, and a prime location near nightlife and shopping.

Mid-Range: All Day Place Shibuya

All Day Place offers minimalist yet comfortable rooms with easy access to the famous Shibuya Crossing, shopping areas, and trendy cafes. It’s a perfect choice for travelers looking for convenience and a contemporary atmosphere. I stayed here twice! It’s also connected to a great restaurant/bar/coffeeshop!

Luxury: The Peninsula Tokyo

For a five-star stay, The Peninsula Tokyo in Ginza offers spacious rooms, world-class dining, and stunning views of the Imperial Palace Gardens. It’s an ideal spot for luxury travelers who want both elegance and convenience.

Where to Stay in Kyoto

I love Kyoto so much – and I think everyone who visits feels the same! Kyoto is known for its historic temples, serene gardens, and traditional tea houses. It’s a much different vibe compared to Tokyo or Osaka, even though there’s plenty of city to be had here too. As for neighborhoods, I’d recommend staying near Gion or Kawaramachi since these areas will give you easy access to major attractions.

However, there is SO much more to see in Kyoto than what you’ll typically see recommended, so make sure you check out my Hidden Gems guide for my detailed itinerary and map of locations that are ACTUALLY off the beaten path.

Here’s where to stay for budget, mid-range, and luxury travelers:

Budget: The Millennials Kyoto

I love this place! It’s a stylish yet budget-friendly capsule hotel that will give you a very modern experience. Rooms are equipped with smart technology, comfortable pods, and there’s also a fantastic communal area.

Mid-Range: Hotel The Celestine Kyoto Gion

If you’re after a great location, which I always am when it comes to accommodation, this is your spot! It’s located in the historic Gion district which is one of my favorite parts ot the city! It’s a boutique hotel with contemporary design AND traditional Japanese aesthetics. It’s perfect for travelers like myself who want comfort and culture in one package!

Luxury: The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto

I had to recommend this spot for luxury travelers! While I haven’t stayed here myself, I’ve walked past this property many times. It overlooks the Kamo River in the center of town and offers an ultra-luxurious stay with beautifully designed rooms, Michelin-star dining, and a peaceful atmosphere that really reflects the overall vibe of Kyoto.

Where to Stay in Osaka

I’ve heard you either love or hate Osaka, but I’m one of those who loves it! Osaka is famous for its street food (SO GOOD!), vibrant nightlife (I’m not much of a nightlife person but I loved the Tenma area for this!), and the outgoing atmosphere (noticeably different from other areas of Japan!) I’d recommend staying in or near Namba or Umeda so you’re close to all the action.

Budget: Acro Capsule Hotel Namba Dotonbori

This little spot is located in the heart of Dotonbori and it’s perfect for budget travelers who want a clean and comfortable place to crash after exploring Osaka’s lively streets. It’s definitely in the hustle and bustle area of it all, and this is a traditional CAPSULE type of hotel…so be warned!

Mid-Range: Cross Hotel Osaka

I stayed here on my last visit to Osaka and it’s in a great location. It’s also very stylish and has spacious rooms at a reasonable price. It’s just minutes from Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori, which makes it a great base for exploring and close to public transport.

Luxury: Conrad Osaka

I just love Conrad properties! I wish I could have afforded to stay here myself, but I got great reviews from friends who have stayed here! Or you can use Hilton points! Conrad Osaka has awesome skyline views, world-class dining on the property, and luxurious rooms. It’s located in the Umeda district which is more of the business district, but it’s super close to top attractions and nearby public transport.
